Our local MP is not pleased with the Federal Government’s decision to buy Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline and its related infrastructure.
Kootenay-Coumbia’s Wayne Stetski says many of his constituents feel betrayed by the $4.5 billion purchase.
“The betrayal comes in because in 2015 during the campaign the Liberals promised to end fossil fuel subsidies, and yet yesterday they bought a pipeline for $4.5 billion.”
Stetski says he’d rather see the money go towards initiatives like forming a universal health care plan or green energy transition.
“There’s so many other things that could be done with anywhere from $4.5 billion to $15 billion to build that pipeline.”
He adds the sale pertains to the existing 65-year-old pipeline and taxpayers could be on the hook for billions of dollars more if the expansion is built.
The expansion is estimated to cost between $7 billion and $15 billion.
