Fortis BC is reminding residents and contractors in the East Kootenay to call before digging.
This after two recent gas leaks in Fernie.
Damage Prevention and Emergency Services Manager Ian Turnbull says there has been 32 incidents in the community where gas lines have been ruptured since 2015.
He believes major infrasturcture work west of Fernie the past few years is a big reason.
“What I think has occurred there is they’ve had so much activity in a short period of time that what might have been spread out over a number of years has happened in a 2 or 3 year period.”
During that same 3 year span, 6 incidents have been reported in Sparwood, 11 in Kimberley and 42 in Cranbrook.
Turnbull says many of these instances can be prevented by calling or clicking BC One Call.
“If you’re digging in your yard, or working for a large company doing any kind of excavation work, make sure you make your call to BC One Call, and that’s going to help you prevent any damage.”
