The proponents for an electric vehicle network in the East Kootenay says there is not enough supply to meet the demand.
Accelerate Kootenays says its very difficult to get an electric vehicle in the East Kootenay as there is not enough of the cars available for sale.
Project Manager Megan Lohmann feels the issue needs attention from all levels of government.
“Its something that needs to be looked at from that provincial scale, but of course with the support of the local and regional governments here,” Lohmann says. “We are seeing certainly a demand increasing significantly across the Kootenays and a little bit of a delay in terms of supply from the auto manufacturers.”
Lohmann says more people are wanting to buy electric vehicles to get away from rising prices at gas stations.
“Its something that I think will continue to see more availability of models from the auto manufacturers and a decrease of the cost of these vehicles as the battery technology improves over time,” Lohmann says.
Accelerate Kootenay celebrated the completion of a charging station network covering nearly 500 kilometres of Highway 3 last week.
Lohmann says drivers can now recharge their vehicle in nearly every community along Highway 3 from Sparwood to Greenwood.
