Volunteer firefighters throughout the RDEK are praising a new benefits program being offered region wide.
This from the Regional District, who says they’ve been receiving great feedback on the program over the last three months.
Building and Protective Services Manager Sanford Brown says volunteer firefighters didn’t have benefits before this service was put in place.
He says it goes a long way to support crews serving an essential role.
“Its to show our existing volunteers that we appreciate them and we’re here to support them,” Brown says. “We rolled this out after talking with them and certainly it was something that was brought up that they would appreciate.”
The benefits program provides life insurance, health coverage, dental and an employee assistance program.
“They are quite well-rounded and its a really good program,” Brown says.
Brown hopes new volunteers will look at the service and consider supporting local fire departments long term.
The RDEK has fire departments in Hosmer, Elko, Baynes Lake, Jaffray, Edgewater, Windermere, Panorama and Fairmont.
