A program supporting families in need is returning to the Farmers’ Market in Kimberley.
The market will kick off its fifth year in Kimberley Thursday afternoon.
It will be one of six markets in East Kootenay communities to include the nutrition coupons after an expansion of the program by CBT to support lower income families.
Coordinator Erna Jensen says the service provides easier access to healthy foods.
“They can have the opportunity to shop at the market for fresh produce, meat, eggs, nuts, cheese, that kind of thing,” Jensen says. “We will be expanding the number of families that are going to be able to access Farmers Market produce through that program.”
She says it provides great support for families seeking healthy alternatives.
“It has expanded for this season, as there were additional funds made available,” Jensen says. “We are able to offer $21 per week to lower income families.”
The Columbia Basin Trust recently announced they would spend $100,000 to support the coupon initiative.
The market runs 5 pm to 7:30 pm on Howard Street.
