A Sparwood Secondary School graduate will have an easier time transitioning to post secondary education thanks to a scholarship administered by the Columbia Basin Trust.
Mackenzie Sedrovic is one of four Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship recipients for 2018.
They’re awarded by the family of the late CBT president and CEO Neil Muth to students who have battled adversity.
Sedrovic says he’s been dealing with adversity his whole life.
He says “I was born with a congenital birth defects so it was a challenge from the get-go. But I ended up playing basketball for 5 and a half years.”
The $3,000 scholarship will allow Sedrovic to begin the Human Service Worker program at College of the Rockies in the fall.
He says he wants to get into that line of work to use his experience to make a difference in people’s lives.
Sedrovic says “I spent a lot of time in my life mental health disorders, fighting battles of depression and anxiety and stuff like that. Having the chance to get out in the community and meet kids who are like me going through similar situations really spoke to me in knowing I have a chance to make a difference in somebody’s life or positively influence someone.”
Cathy Muth, the wife of late Columbia Basin Trust president and CEO Neil Muth, says her family received 70 scholarship applications this year, which made for some difficult choices.
“Every story is well worth pondering. I would have loved to give everybody money because they’re all very touching stories.”
She says her husband was a big supporter of continuing education and the scholarship is a great way to remember him.
“Neil was always pushing all of us to continue education, to keep learning and be curious. He went down that path himself, he was taking courses all his life and really encouraged everybody to strive for the best they can be.”
The scholarship was established last year to honour Neil Muth who suddenly passed away in November of 2016.
