Trail users in Fernie are being warned to avoid the Ridgemont Trails after a close encounter with a moose Saturday.
WildSafeBC Elk Valley is reporting that a mountain biker was charged by a female moose defending her calves on Broken Derailleur.
The report says the biker avoided the attack and backtracked to Ridgemont Road before riding up to Eric’s Trail entrance where the moose and calves were encountered again.
No injuries were reported.
Trail users are reminded that moose cows are very protective of their young and may attack is they feel threatened.
A moose may lower its head and flatten its ears before charging, so be sure to find an escape route if you see a moose acting in this way.
