Local BC Conservation Service officers handed out nearly 10-thousand dollars worth of fines over the long weekend for illegal campfires.
Officer Denny Chretien says they came across four fires Friday and five on Saturday.
“Overall on the Friday it escalated and continued into Saturday, but things started to look a lot better as we got near the end of the long weekend in terms of compliance.”
Chretien says each instance resulted in an $1,150 ticket.
He adds none of the infractions dealt with local residents but was surprised to see how many instances they dealt with in the earlier stages of the long weekend.
“100% of the tickets issued this long weekend were not given to local people.”
He says they didn’t issue that many tickets through all of last year’s fire season.
