The Regional District of East Kootenay has voted to allow a new marina to be built on Lake Windermere.
The original plan called for a dock to house 90 boats but the project’s scope has shurnk to 60 vessels.
Area F director Wendy Booth says the new marina would replace the network of 46 mooring buoys on the lake.
“The idea and the concept behind it is to have an overnight moorage facility, and that would remove all the existing mooring buoys. We do know that an overnight moorage facility is a smaller footprint than all the existing mooring buoys.”
Booth says an open house on the issue last month showed about a 50/50 split of residents for and against the project.
She says some of the concerns include increased vehicle traffic, parking and erosion in the area.
“Regardless of this being approved or not, those [issues] would still exist. It is a small area, it is a private beach. Part of this agreement has opened it to the public.”
The marina was proposed by the Pedley Community Association and the Baltac Community Association.
