Fernie’s Mayor says it will be a welcome addition to have the city’s arena back up and running.
The Memorial Arena’s ice plant was delivered Wednesday, with staff training ahead of the facility’s re-opening next month.
Mayor Mary Giuliano says the facility is an important asset that the city is ready to put back to use after nearly being closed for a full year.
“We’re really looking to getting everything back to normal and I’m sure that everybody in the community is too,” Giuliano says. “As normal as anything will ever feel like after the tragedy that we had, because I certainly don’t ever want to forget about that.”
Giuliano says its hard to move on following the tragedy that took three lives last October.
“All of us at the City of Fernie will never forget those wonderful people that were lost,” Giuliano says. “The arena is such an important asset to everybody, that having it back to normal and working and being used will be a really welcome addition.”
The city also plans to continue use of the outdoor community rink that was operated while the arena was closed.
Staff are inviting residents to stop by the outdoor rink Thursday, August 16th to discuss future programming and long-term plans for the new amenity.
