Elk Valley RCMP confirm only one person died in the apartment fire in Sparwood Thursday night.
Police say they have accounted for all residents of the apartment building and found the remains of a man inside the burnt out apartment block.
They say the male appears to have succumbed to smoke and heat in the hallway outside his apartment.
Police have been in touch with the family of the deceased.
Elk Valley RCMP have determined the fire is not a criminal matter and have turned over the investigation to the BC Coroner Service and the Fire Commissioner’s office.
Mounties responded to the fire in Sparwood Heights alongside Sparwood and Elkford fire department, finding one of four apartment blocks fully engulfed in flames.
Fire crews prevented the spread of the fire to other buildings while Officers connected with each of the building’s residents.
Emergency Social Services has been set up at the Sparwood Rec centre on Pine Avenue in Sparwood and all persons that have been displaced by the fire or evacuated from the other 3 apartment blocks are asked to attend and register there. ESS personnel are on hand to assist those in need. There is also a clothing drive that has been started and residents can drop off clothing donations at the Rec centre. Worthy of special mention are those residents who attended to the area of the fire last night with food, coffee and water for the firefighters and other first responders that were on scene throughout the night.
