The Mayor of Sparwood says the District is looking at long-term plans on how to deal with Thursday’s apartment fire.
Sparwood’s Mayor Cal McDougall says the fire in Sparwood Heights is devastating for the entire district.
McDougall says it will be a challenge to house all the evacuated residents, with 24 burnt out apartments and another building damaged by water.
“We’re looking at around 50 units that are going to require housing,” McDougall says. “Our housing market here right now is so tight, so that’s what we are discussing right now.”
McDougall praised the efforts of first responders, Emergency Social Services and all volunteers.
He says the entire community is coming together to support the families affected.
“There’s an immediate need of course and then there’s long term,” McDougall says. “What’s going to happen? Will they rebuild? Things like that. So we are in touch with the strata people and we are trying to get a handle on that.”
All residents have been accounted for, with the remains of one man found inside the burnt out apartment block.
The deceased’s family has been notified.
