The Coal Creek wildfire continues to grow east of Fernie.
The fire located around the Coal Creek Forest Service Road about 12 kilometres from the community is now estimated at 713 hectares in size.
BC Wildfire Service says the blaze is displaying “vigorous fire behaviour” and is highly visible from Fernie and Alberta.
They say the blaze is not currently threatening communities.
It has led to a number of area road closures.
The Coal Creek Forest Service Road is closed beginning at the 33 km mark.
The Leach Creek Forest Service Road is restricted beginning at the junction of Leach Creek Forest Service Road.
The Corbin Road, and Morrisey Creek Forest Service Road are restricted beginning at the 0.3 km on Morrisey Forest Service Road, from the junction with Morrisey Road.
At this time, its not known what caused the blaze.
Heavy equipment is working on building containment lines on the south end of the fire. A bucketing helicopter is also on site.
