The BC Government has requested support from the Federal Government to help with the province’s wildfire situation but no word yet where additional resources would be deployed.
Minister of Public Safety Mike Farnworth says they’re seeking 200 personnel, heavy lifting aircraft and aircraft to support those who have been evacuated from rural areas.
“We’ve been working with the Federal Government for some time in terms of what types of resources would be required once that determination had been made by staff in my ministry. On that recommendation we’ve put in a request to the Federal Government.”
Evacuation orders and alerts are in effect in the East Kootenay due to wildfires.
This includes an evacuation order for 9 properties outside of Radium including Nipika Mountain Resort while 10 properties outside of Sparwood in the Corbin Road area have been downgraded from evacuation order to alert.
Wildfires north and west of Kimberley have prompted 121 evacuation alerts in the Ta Ta Creek area as well as 65 around St. Mary Valley.
No evacuation orders or alerts have been in Kimberley.
One property near Yahk is on evacuation alert.
A number of large wildfires continue to burn in our region.
The Sage Creek blaze south of Fernie is over 1,900 hectares and is receiving action from air and ground.
The 3,600 hectare Wardle fire continues to impact conditions along Highway 93 between Radium and Alberta.
Travel is recommended between 7:00 am – 2:00 pm.
The Blazed Creek fire west of Creston is nearly 5,200 hectares and is close to Highway 3.
