BC Hydro says you can expect more extended outages in the East Kootenay due to fire safety measures.
This after several large blackouts were reported last weekend in Cranbrook, Canal Flats and Skookumchuck
Spokesperson Sally Macdonald says the utility is blocking its system’s ability to deal with minor power line faults.
“The distribution system won’t automatically be reenergized following a fault. So for example, if a bird hits a wire or a branch lands on a wire, the system would detect the fault and then automatically shut off power,” Macdonald says.
Macdonald says this minimizes sparking if a branch touches the line, which could ignite wildfires.
She says they’ve been using similar strategies for years during the fire season.
Macdonald says this weekend’s blackouts were caused by transmission outages and were not affected by the no reclose policy.
