The Regional District of East Kootenay has activated its Emergency Operations Centre in Cranbrook to help with the current wildfire situation.
Protective services manager Sanford Brown the centre is a useful resource for those on the front line battling fires.
“What the Emergency Operations Centre does is it helps coordinate and support the overall response to any emergencies. Currently we have between 8 and 12 trained team members in the facility operating between 10 and 18 hours a day.”
Brown says the centre will remain open until the wildfire situation settles.
“We have a team that continually pre-plans. We are planning ahead, we are thinking of what the situation is on the ground, we plan to see how we can be better prepared for what’s happening on the ground. That happens on a daily basis.”
Through the RDEK’s Emergency Program, the centre coordinates evacuation alerts or orders, provides emergency social services and conveys information to evacuees.
