The Incident Management Team in charge of firefighting efforts on the Meachen Creek fire west of Kimberley says winds earlier yesterday afternoon were lighter than expected.
Fire crews say smoky skies worked in their favour Thursday.
They say winds picked up later in the evening but containment lines were holding in the fire’s northeast corner.
It’s now estimated at 9,073 hectares due to more accurate mapping from a high level scan.
65 St. Mary Valley properties near the fire remain on evacuation order and the evacuation alert for the City of Kimberley still stands.
Evacuation alerts for 121 Ta Ta Creek area properties and a property near Yahk are still active, as is an evacuation order for nine properties outside of Radium.
