With wildfires raging nearby, Fernie residents are being urged to be FireSmart.
Fernie Fire and Emergency Services is getting hands on with a safety demonstration on how to protect your home from blazes.
Chief Ted Ruiter says Fernie is surrounded by forest and the threat of wildfires is great.
“The idea here is to educate people in communities of Fernie the importance of FireSmart for your property,” Ruiter says. “Things to take into consideration like vegetation selection, building materials for your home, just cleaning up shrubs, trees and limbs and getting rid of the underbrush to help mitigate the threat of fire.”
Ruiter says weeds and tall grass around your property needs to be managed.
“The hope is that everybody cleans up their properties by getting rid of the underbrush,” Ruiter says. “Currently, We right now have the Coal Creek Fire. Those embers get airborne and they do stay alive for quite some distance.”
The demonstration runs 9 am to 4 pm Saturday at St Margaret`s Cemetery in the Ridgemont Area.
Ruiter is encouraging all residents to get involved.
