The MLA for Columbia River-Revelstoke is praising the efforts of fire crews at the Meachen Creek fire west of Kimberley.
Doug Clovechok recently took a helicopter tour with Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick of the over 9,000 hectare blaze.
“I know a lot of people have mentioned ‘Why haven’t they been using water bombers?’ There’s just no way that you could fly an airplane in there,” Clovechok says. “So fixed wing support is not available and has not been available simply because of the terrain. The helicopters have been doing an amazing job bucketing retardant and bucketing water in on the fire.”
He says the management team from Ontario is working daily to keep the fires away from the city and surrounding properties.
“Its such tough, tough, terrain that it just gives you an appreciation that these people are putting themselves in harms way to protect our families and our homes and our businesses,” Clovechok says. “I was so impressed by the work they were doing and how hard they were working.”
Clovechok also commended Kimberley businesses and residents for their response to the evacuation alert.
He says he’s never seen an alert like this in the city’s recent history.
