The Skookumchuck Pulp Mill is celebrating a milestone anniversary.
The Kraft pulp mill has been operating for 50 years in the Columbia Valley.
General manager Gavin Baxter says its amazing for a mill this size to continue operating after half a century.
“I think it goes to the level of commitment that the employees and companies over the years and Paper Excellence has put in the mill to keep the mill going the way it has been going for the last 50 years,” Baxter says. “Its been very productive and has been a great part of the community.”
Baxter says they’ve employed hundreds of people since production first began, with 285 people working there currently.
“Over the years, we’ve had many employees go through here and lots of people started their careers here and ended their careers here when they retired,” Baxter says. “There’s a lot of retirees in the community who worked here and decided to retire in the East Kootenay and stay here.”
Baxter says they’ve increased from producing 350 tonnes a day when the mill first began operations to around 800 tonnes daily through continued investment from Paper Excellence.
He says the last four years have seen a strong increase in demand for pulp worldwide, fuelling production at the mill.
