The District of Elkford is calling for a ban on cannabis and vaping in all public places.
This from Mayor Dean McKerracher, as District Council gave first and second readings to an amended smoking bylaw earlier this week, targeting both vaping and marijuana.
“Cannabis is a bit different, it affects people different and so therefore, we feel that it doesn’t pertain to the smoking bylaw, but it does pertain to the alcohol bylaw,” McKerracher says. “We added the vaping as well.”
Mayor Dean McKerracher feels the move will help protect residents from second-hand smoke.
“Cannabis will be treated as if it were alcohol and so therefore, no smoking of cannabis in any public place,” McKerracher says. “If they want to smoke it at their home or on private property, that’s entirely up to them. We can’t legislate that, but we can regulate smoking in public places within the municipality.”
The Consumer Choice Centre argues the bylaw unfairly targets renters.
They feel renters are forced into a prohibition of sorts, as they are also not allowed to smoke inside their apartments.
McKerracher says the District is open for discussion on this issue.
He encourages residents to attend a public hearing on the proposed bylaw happening September 19th.
