The members of the Elko Fire Department were recently involved in a life-changing call to action.
Fire crews were called in the early morning hours August 2nd as a first-time mother-to-be was in labour.
Firefighters were on scene as the baby was coming and minutes later at 1:56 am, a healthy baby girl was born.
Baby Alice Donna Vickery and her mom Jen were cared for until the BC Ambulance Service arrived and transported them to the hospital in Fernie.
This was the first delivery for the department and the first baby to be physically born in the community of Elko since 1934, according to locals.
Expecting mothers generally go to hospital in Cranbrook or Fernie when the baby is due.
To mark the occasion, Alice was presented with her own fire department t-shirt and a certificate making her an honourary member of Elko Fire.
