The Regional District of East Kootenay’s emergency operations centre director says he’s happy that all evacuation orders in the region have been removed.
Terry Balan says the emergency operation centre will remain active for now.
“The emergency operations centre will be engaged until our last couple of [evacuation] alerts come off. We’re still here to support our residents in the region.”
Evacuation alerts are still active for 65 St. Mary Valley properties and nine properties outside of Radium including Nipika Mountain Resort.
Balan says wildfire season is still active so residents should remain prepared.
“We still want the folks in St. Mary [Valley] that they’re still under alert and that there’s still potential. It’s still September and last year we were looking at a lot of fire activity this time of year. We still want everyone to be on alert and be ready.”
The RDEK also removed the evacuation alert for the City of Kimberley yesterday.
