Sparwood’s mayor is hoping to have some productive discussions at this year’s Union of BC Municipalities convention in Whistler.
Cal McDougall says he wants to talk to as many delegates as possible regarding clean air bylaws ahead of next month’s legalization of cannabis.
“The way different communities are dealing with it and handling it, it’s a very difficult situation. I want to talk to as many people as I can over there about that situation.
He says Sparwood has an idea as to how potential bylaws could work but wants to make sure they aren’t too heavy-handed.
McDougall says he’s particularly interested in seeing what other communities are considering for their clean air bylaws which limit smoking in public.
“We’ve kind of developed a rough draft as to where Sparwood wants to go with clean air. We want to incorporate some of the tobacco laws as well with the clean air. We want to be cautious not to go too far.
Nearby Elkford is considering a complete ban of cannabis and vaping in public areas.
The UBCM convention finishes Friday.
