Eight cows had to be destroyed after a serious tractor trailer crash at the Elko Tunnel.
Police say the trailer was hauling 64 cattle to Alberta late Friday evening when it made contact with the rock tunnel.
Constable Debra Katerenchuk says there was significant damage to the trailer and about 13 of the animals were dislodged.
“Eight cows had to be put down due to their injuries and/or they were deceased at the time,” Katerenchuk says. “51 cows have been tied together and are off to Alberta. Five were off roaming around and those have been recovered and were in good health.”
The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured and there were no other motor vehicles involved in the incident.
Elk Valley RCMP is thanking the Emergency Veterinarian service, the fire department, Emergency Health Services, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Highway Departments and Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement.
