The leader of the BC Liberal party is expressing concerns over the upcoming referendum on electoral reform.
The mail in ballot will ask residents if they’d like to adopt proportional representation to replace the current first past the post system to determine election winners.
Andrew Wilkinson was the keynote speaker at Cranbrook’s monthly Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday.
Wilkinson says the ballot the NDP have written for the referendum is confusing and lays down 3 vaguely defined options.
“MMP, RUP and BMR and you’re supposed to learn what those are,” Wilkinson says. “The formulas behind them will not be disclosed. And the media asked repeatedly ‘How about maps showing what the new ridings will look like, so people get a sense of how it will work?’ NDP refused, no maps.”
He says its important to vote regardless what your opinion on proportional representation is.
The Referendum will take place between October 22nd and November 30.
