The official legalization of cannabis is happening this month and Cranbrook City Council is working to hammer out all the details.
At Monday night’s council meeting a councillor moved to amend the zoning bylaw preventing cannabis from being within a set distance from liquor stores.
Council approved the amendment but agreed retail cannabis stores should be kept a distance from schools and hospitals.
Mayor Lee Pratt says council has been faced with a learning curve in regards to cannabis.
“The Province is the one that’s going to control it,” Pratt says. “So we’re relying on the province and they’re relying on us. So we thought we’ve got to get proactive here and start the process for what we think is right for Cranbrook. So that’s what we’ve done”
Cannabis will be legalized October 17th.
The members of council will be voted on October 20th.
