Plastic bags may be banned from Invermere stores.
This as voters had two non-binding opinion poll questions to answer during Saturday’s Municipal Election.
During the municipal election, the majority of Invermere residents voted yes when asked if they would be ok with banning plastic checkout bags form all retail stores in Invermere.
The referendum produced 727 “yes” votes while 323 people voted “no.”
Invermere is one of several communities that are seeking to address the environmental issue around plastic bags.
Also voted on was the purchase of the Lake Windermere Resort Lands.
Invermere residents voted yes when asked if they would be in favor of the District purchasing the land for a price no higher then 5-million dollars.
The referendum garnered 682 “yes” votes while 352 voted “no.”
The land has been unused since 1992. If purchased it will be used as a boat launch for the community.
