Unionized southern interior forestry workers returned to the bargaining table with the IFLRA in Kelowna, BC on October 30, 2018 with a 98% strike mandate.
USW members’ outrage was clear to the southern forestry employers as a new IFLRA proposal was tabled, removing many of their concessions.
Regrettably this progress was short lived. After two days of attempting to find middle ground, your committee determined that the southern employers needed to understand USW members were serious and served 72-hour strike notice.
Your Committee remains determined to negotiate a fair collective agreement that ensures workers share in the employer past and future profits. The parties agreed that in order to conclude a new agreement without escalating strike action, mediation would be required.
The parties applied for an appointment of a labour board mediator on November 1, 2018. Until Mediation is concluded, both parties in the South are restricted from engaging in either a strike or a lockout.
Additional information will be provided when available and dates with the mediator are confirmed.
