The lumber industry in the Kootenays might be dramatically affected as forestry workers prepare to go on rotating strikes.
On Friday, it was announced the negotiations between the United Steel Workers and the Interior Forest Labour Relations Association had broken down.
Bob Matters, the USW’s lead negotiator, says the industry insisted on keeping concessions on the table and dictating conditions on bargaining, leading to the breakdown after three days.
In a press release by the USW, it was confirmed that Dave Schaub has been hired as a mediator to hopefully resume communication.
The rotating strikes could potentially affect over 800 workers in the Kootenays.
Job action is expected to begin sometime this week.
