Sparwood District Council is set to adopt amendments to their Clean Air Bylaw.
The bylaw is up for adoption at Monday’s meeting and includes a six metre smoking buffer around public buildings and community recreation spaces.
Smokers would be prevented from using cigarettes or cannabis near playgrounds, outdoor parks and public entrances, window or air intake of public buildings
Sparwood mayor David Wilks says making the bylaw more uniform will properly address the needs of both smokers and non smokers.
“We were trying to find a place here where we could allow people to still have cigarettes, or also marijuana now because its legal, within a reasonable area of the Rec Centre, but also so it wasn’t an annoyance to the general public who do not smoke,” Wilks says.
District staff also recommends establishing a communications plan to educate the public on tobacco and cannabis use in public places.
