Fernie’s Chamber of Commerce is supporting BC Buy Local Week.
The week-long event is underway throughout the province.
Executive director Patty Vadnais says it’s important to shop local and support local business.
“Supporting local business does a number of things,” says Vadnais. “It supports local jobs, we have a number of local shops that sponsor local events and so that money stays in the community to make the community a better place. It’s environmentally friendly, you don’t have to drive out of town to pick up that goods that you want.”
BC Buy Local Week is meant to remind people that homegrown companies are more likely to contribute through sponsorship and volunteering to support local causes.
Vadnais says the event also serves as a reminder to the important role local businesses play in their communities.
“Anything that raises the awareness of the importance of local business is a benefit to the community.”
The province says an average of $46 goes back into the local economy for every $100 spent at local businesses.
That’s more than double the impact of money spent with multi-national retailers.
BC Buy Local Week runs from December 3 – December 9.
