The distance smokers need to keep from public areas in Sparwood has increased.
This as new amendments to the district’s Clean Air Bylaw are now in effect.
The amendment ensures a six meter buffer from public buildings for smoking tobacco or cannabis.
Mayor David Wilks says the amendment is a living document and is subject to possible change depending on the public’s reception.
“It can be modified at any given time,” Wilks says. “We’ll see how that works. If people think it should be farther, or closer for that matter, then we can move it as we see fit.”
The bylaw amendments were inspired by resident complaints about smokers near the Sparwood Rec Centre.
