The Kootenay ICE are back home tonight after a three-game road trip in the US failed to garner a single point.
The ICE are now on a mission to shake their nine-game losing streak when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes tonight.
Lethbridge currently sits at second place in the Central Division standings while the ICE are sixth.
This will be Kootenay’s first home game since a pair of trades Friday which stockpiled draft picks and cut loose popular forwards Cam Hausinger and Brett Davis.
Davis and Hausinger were both traded to Red Deer for a quartet of forwards and five draft picks.
ICE president and general manager Matt Cockell says the trade with Red Deer will help the ICE build for the future.
“We thought it was the right time for a number of different reasons to both provide an opportunity for older players,” says Cockell. “Red Deer hopes to be on a long playoff run.”
The team received first, third and sixth round draft picks in 2019, a second round pick in 2020 and a conditional pick in 2022 as well as forwards River Fahey and Austin Schellenberg, Justin Svenson and Chase Bertholet.
Fahey and Schellenberg made their debut with the team on their weekend road trip.
Cockell is excited for the team’s return in the deal.
“It allows us to begin the process of transferring the leadership of the group to younger players to start having a little bit more responsibility.”
The Red Deer Rebels are happy with the trade as well.
Assistant general manager Shaun Sutter says the veteran forwards will make a great addition to the Rebels’ roster.
“Both Cam [Hausinger] and Brett [Davis] have been in Cranbrook for awhile and helped produce for that team, and on our end they’re players we’ve been grooming to grow with a core group of players, it’s always sad to see players go on both ends.”
The ICE also swung a deal with the Kelowna Rockets to pick up forward Jack Cowell.
Cowell has 51 points in 156 career WHL games.
Puck drops at 7:00 pm for tonight’s game.
