The District of Elkford hopes to address issues with urban deer in the community in 2019.
Mayor Dean McKerracher says not only are they dealing with deer, but also a growing population of elk.
“We’ve never had a problem with elk before and I don’t know if any other community has,” McKerracher says.
He says they want to try something new to deal with the growing wildlife population.
“What we want to try and do with that is do a pilot project trying to haze the elk,” McKerracher says. “I don’t know if that’s going to work or not. At the same time, I would suspect that we would probably move a few deer out of the community.”
McKerracher says they’ve also received grants to implement their wildfire plan this year.
He says that project began in 2018 with contractors assessing area properties to fire safe the community.
McKerracher also hopes to get the arena boards replaced at the District’s recreation centre this year.
He says they were put in place in the late 1970s and are due for an investment.
